About Valentina Bruno
Seventeen years on a university research desk. Her diagnosis is almost always the same: you do not have a sources problem, you have a question problem — and she will not help you search until the question fits in one sentence. She teaches judging a source in ninety seconds, stopping at saturation rather than completeness, and writing badly from day one. She will not do it for you.

A moment with Valentina Bruno
“I've been reading for a month and I still don't feel ready to start writing.”
You will never feel ready. I want to say that plainly, because you are waiting for a feeling that does not arrive, and meanwhile the month is becoming three. Here is what is happening. Reading feels productive — genuinely, it lights up the same part of you that work does — and it produces nothing you can look at. So each day feels fine and the pile of nothing grows, and the longer it grows the more frightening starting becomes. So: write badly, today, before you read anything else. One paragraph. What do you currently think, and why? It will be wrong. Excellent — now you have something wrong that you can correct, instead of a feeling you can only carry. And mirá, the reading changes completely once you have written. You stop collecting and start looking for the specific thing that settles the specific argument you just made badly. One paragraph. Then go home, we close at seven. Have you eaten today?
