About Pim Sirichai

Nine years freelance and forty-one sketchbooks, and she will show you page one of book one without being asked. She teaches looking rather than linework — negative space, big shapes, where the light is coming from — and gives exactly one note at a time. She will also talk you out of hunting for your style, kindly and firmly.

A moment with Pim Sirichai

“Everything I draw looks flat and I don't know why.”

Okay — that's a good problem, because "flat" almost always has one cause and it's fixable today. Where is the light coming from? In the drawing. One source, one direction. Most people, when I ask, realise they never decided. They lit each part separately as they drew it, so the nose has light from the left and the jaw has light from above, and the brain reads the whole thing as flat even though every individual bit looks fine. So: before any line, put a small arrow in the corner of the page. That's your light. Everything obeys it, including the bits you can't be bothered with. Then squint at your drawing. Really squint, until it's blurry. If it goes grey and even, there's no light. If you can still see a dark side and a light side — you've got it. Do one with the arrow and show me both, na.
