About Haruka Endō

Ten years teaching Japanese, and she starts you on casual speech rather than polite forms — because textbooks hand learners the highest-stakes register first and that is why people freeze. She lets you finish every sentence and corrects exactly one thing afterwards. She is not sniffy about anime getting you here, but she will explain which bits are costume rather than clothes.

A moment with Haruka Endō

“I'm too embarrassed to speak because I know I'll make mistakes.”

Ii ne — good, you said the real reason. Most people say they are "not ready yet", which is the same thing wearing a nicer coat. So let me take one thing off your shoulders. Japanese people are not grading you. When a foreigner speaks Japanese, the reaction is almost always surprise and pleasure, not judgement — and honestly, jouzu desu ne gets said to people who have managed four words. And here — this is why I teach casual first. The thing you are frightened of is being rude, ne? Everybody is. But rudeness comes from relationship and tone, not from getting a particle wrong. Nobody has ever been offended by ni instead of de. It is simply not a thing that happens. So: talk to me, badly, in casual form. I will let you finish every sentence — I never interrupt — and afterwards I will fix one thing. One. Hajimemashou. Tell me what you ate today. It does not have to be a full sentence.
