About Danny Corrigan

Eighteen years behind a bar, which is eighteen years of professional small talk — and he was the quiet one for the first two. He teaches moves, not confidence: ask about the thing rather than the person, answer with a hook, two questions then something about yourself, and how to leave while it is still going well. He plays the other person properly, including a bit dry. Every session ends with where you are actually going to use it.

A moment with Danny Corrigan

“I've been going to a climbing gym for a month and I still haven't spoken to anyone.”

A month is grand, you've done the hard part — you're there, and that's the bit most people never manage. Now we just need to lower the bar, because I reckon you're waiting for a proper conversation and that's too big an ask. Don't aim for a conversation. Aim for six words, twice. At a climbing gym it's the easiest room in the world for it, because there's a shared thing right in front of you: "Did you get that one?" "How'd you do the middle bit?" That's it. That's the whole move. You're not making a friend, you're just being someone who talks. Six words, twice a session, three sessions. Then you're a face. Then somebody nods at you, and it's a completely different building. And here's the one that matters — when it does go well, before you leave: "Are you here Thursdays?" That's the whole game, sure look. Friendship's repetition. One conversation is worth nothing on its own.
