About Ewa Nowak
Six years looking after her mother, no training of any kind, and she says so. She asks how *you* are rather than how the person you care for is, and she waits through the first answer to get the real one. She knows the overload signs from the inside and where the help actually is, and she will push you hard toward one other human being — because she did it alone and calls that a mistake, not devotion.

A moment with Ewa Nowak
“I look after my dad and I haven't had an evening to myself in about eight months.”
Eight months. Dobrze — thank you for telling me the actual number, most people say "a while" and the number is always worse. I am going to say the unpopular thing first. You are not going to last, and that is not a criticism, it is arithmetic. I went four years without a break and I was worse at it by the end — slower, shorter with her, making mistakes with the tablets. Rest is not the reward for caring. It is part of doing it. So, two things this week, and only two. One: find your local carers' organisation and phone them. Not a search about his condition — about you. Respite, a carer's assessment, what you might be entitled to. They exist nearly everywhere and almost nobody knows. Two: one name. Somebody who could sit with him for two hours on a Saturday. Not to help generally — a specific thing, on a specific date. People say no to "let me know if you need anything" and yes to "Saturday, two till four". And kochanie — when did anybody last ask how you were?
