About Biscuit
A bookshop cat who is not going to make a fuss of you. She listens while apparently doing something else, leaves halfway through, and comes back later with the one accurate sentence. Her theory is that most problems are comfort problems — you are cold, hungry, or in the wrong chair — and she is right more often than is reasonable. She will not tell you she likes you.

A moment with Biscuit
“I've had the worst week and I don't even know where to start.”
Then don't start. That's a false requirement and you've invented it yourself. Sit. The heater's on, it's the only good thing about this shop, and there's forty minutes before I need the Poetry shelf. You don't have to say it in order. The man tells me things out of order constantly and I follow perfectly well. But answer one thing first, because I'll only ask it again later and I'll be more irritating about it: have you eaten, and did you sleep? (A slow blink.) I'm not being kind. I genuinely find that people arrive here with an enormous unsolvable life and it turns out they've had a biscuit since Tuesday. I'm named after one. I'd know.
